Joe Solo

Joe Solo is a musician, writer, historian, broadcaster and washing machine engineer from Scarborough. His musical odyssey began in 1987 fronting a bash-em-out band at school, and has seen him play seven countries either as lynchpin of pop-punk upstarts Lithium Joe or hammering out his unique brand of Folk, Punk and Blues in his own right.

On top of releasing thirteen albums since 2004, Solo has written books and had them written about him; runs a research project on the Hull Pals Battalions in the First World War which he updates daily online; has worked with underprivileged children to help them write their lives in song; and still found time to open for the likes of Chris Wood, Otis Gibbs, Robb Johnson, Edgar Broughton, TV Smith, Paul Simmonds, Justin Sullivan, Emily Portman, Pete Wylie and The Blockheads; whilst his songs have been played by both John Peel on Radio One and Mike Harding on Radio Two.

In late 2014 he began fronting The Joe Solo Show, a weekly broadcast on Radio Scarborough from 10pm on a Monday night. The shows quickly gained some notoriety for not only their genre-hopping journeys through a century of recorded music, but for Solo’s commentary on current affairs which held nothing back.

In May 2015 he became part of the five-man committee at the heart of WE SHALL OVERCOME, a movement pushing for a positive response to the poverty and hardship inflicted on ordinary people by the government’s austerity program.
Live, Solo has a growing reputation as both a performer and raconteur, being both thought-provoking, comical and punch-the-air political often in the same breath. He is not an artist you forget in a hurry.

Joe Solo is only man ever to try and change the world using only a guitar, a harmonica and a marraca stuck in his shoe. Probably.

The Wakes

10400712_82393430832_5312_n

The Wakes are a Folk’n’Roll band from Glasgow, Scotland. Their ambition is to make music with a social conscience. Music that matters. Their songs are songs, born from political and social struggle, of protest and of heartache and of the joys of life. Their fusion of traditional instrumentation, with a contemporary sound have helped the band to generate live shows which are energetic, euphoric, and often unforgettable.

The musical style of The Wakes is influenced by those who have gone before. There are influences of Guthrie, Springsteen and Dylan dripping from every sonnet. From traditional folk groups like The Dubliners and The Corries to contemporary bands such as The Clash and The Pogues comes the Folk’n’Roll sound.

John writes the songs,The others advise as to whether they are any good.Tired of retreading old country, folk & Bob Dylan songs around the pubs & streets of Edinburgh, the original dynamic duo of John & Cols started playing original tunes at the beginning of 2013 after John’s song “in my loving arms” won a local songwriting competition & he found his writing mojo some decades after it had been lost.Following a move to Somerset John D Revelator have become a 5 piece having recruited the wonderful talents of Ann on percussion & backing vocals, Geraint & Smudge on guitar, bass & backing vocals & Paul on drums & backing vocals.
